Last year we visited Sturbridge Massachusetts and attended the Old
Sturbridge Village Chrismas by Candlelight event. Continue reading to
find out some info on the event and our thoughts on the X-mas
experience.
This year, 2007, The Old Sturbridge Christmas will be held on
December 7 - December 16 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Evenings 5:00
PM-9:00 PM
Experience the magic of a candlelit Village at Christmas time and
explore the history of the holiday's traditions. Enjoy a special
ambience - the Spirit of the Season - as you stroll the festively
decorated houses and shops around the Common during these Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday evening programs in December (Dec. 7,8,9,14,15,
and 16; 5-9 p.m.). How did fruitcake and roasted chestnuts become
associated with Christmas? Are there plums in plum pudding? What’s the
significance of the Yule log? Discover the history of Christmas cards,
exchanging gifts, hanging stockings, Christmas trees, mistletoe, holly,
poinsettias, and candy canes. You'll learn about these traditions and
more! You'll also have an opportunity to taste samples of several foods
long associated with the holiday. Meet Father Christmas at the Bullard
Tavern on the Village Common, and chat with Santa Claus (bring your
camera!) in the Visitor Center. Depending on the weather, take a lovely
horse-drawn sleigh or wagon ride around the Common.
There also are many performers that do things such as singing, music and more. This year's performers include:
- Worcester Men of Song
- Sounds of Concord
- Elm Street Handbell Choir
- Sturbridge Worship Center Band

When MassHotSpots visited Sturbridge Village, we were pleasantly
surprised with the authenticity and Christmas feel of the event. When
you get there you have to walk through a building where you pay and get
your tickets into the Sturbridge village. We started off checking out
the town hall which had a school choir singing Christmas Carols. After
enjoying this for some time, we moved on to the other buildings. Actors
were dressed up in many of the buildings and would teach you about
various things, such as the history of the Yule log. There was one
house that had a women making incredible looking things out of marzipan
in which we learned some interesting things about how food was dyed in
the old days. There were carolers, bonfires, music, horses, good food,
and all the things a good New England Christmas nees.
We don't want to give away too much, so go visit this fun Christmas
destination in Sturbridge Mass, bring the kids, and be ready for a
night of education and fun!
